The world is a frightening place. Crime. Disease. War. Heartache. Times are trying for anyone, even devoted followers of Jesus. It is easy amidst such chaos to feel despair, or hopelessness, or emptiness. It can feel as if we can’t see God. Yet, despite all of this, we should take comfort in something greater than our own sight. We need to take comfort in the God who sees.
1. His sight is greater than ours
Proverbs 15:3 tells us “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” Selfishness can blind us, can cover our eyes (likescales, perhaps?). It can be so easy for even the most thoughtful people to get caught up in our own little world. Often, we view God through our own lens. After all, God is beyond our human understanding. It can be helpful, then, to remind ourselves of the wisdom in Proverbs. God is never too caught up in himself to lose sight of us. He sees all evil and good throughout the world.
2. God is our Father
A good parent takes care of their children. This does not mean, however, that we should never let our children try and fail. Indeed, one of the best things a parent can do for their children is to teach them how to deal with pain, or failure, or sorrow. “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18) If a father looks after the well-being of his children, even with limited sight, how much more will our heavenly Father look after us?
3. He has a plan for us
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Not only is God our Father, but he is THE Father. He wants what is best for us. All of us. And He knows what that is. It’s hard to think of something more reassuring than this knowledge. He meets us where we are and only asks for our love and listening in return. In the same way a loving parent nurtures our true selves and strengthens our character, so too does God gently lead us through the things which will forge us into instruments in His plan.
